Will Smith’s indecision to whether or not return to his role as Captain Steven Hiller in Roland Emmerich’s Independence Day 2 made writer Jamie Vanderbilt work on two scripts, one with and another without the star.
While
in a press junket for the DVD/Blu-ray release of White House Down director
Roland Emmerich talked to The Playlist about the status of the Independence Day
sequel:
“A
daily battle … The budget, the schedules, the actors … [but] It’s looking
good.”
He then
said that writer Jamie Vanderbilt had written “two versions” of the script, one
with Smith and the other without him.
The original
movie had Will Smith, Bill Pullman, Vivica A. Fox, Jeff Goldblum, Judd Hirsh,
Randy Quaid, Adam Baldwin, Brent Spiner and James Duval.
Actors
Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum are rumored to return. Brent Spiner and Randy
Quaid died in the film, the rest could also return or at least have their
characters mentioned, so it just leaves the star Will Smith to decide to
whether come on board or not.
There
is also a semi-confirmed rumored that the movie will be focused on Will Smith’s
character son, which by now is all grown up and that it will be played by Michael
B. Jordan, meaning that Will Smith’s character would be secondary and not the
lead.
