For
a while now there has been a rumor that Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim will
spawn a video game. Well no more rumors, it’s true. Apparently Yuke’s game
development studio already has a Pacific Rim game adaptation in their pipeline,
so expect even more Jaeger vs Kaiju action.
According
to a Yuke’s press release “Details about the game’s content and release will be
announced as they are finalized.”
And
“Up
until now, “giant monsters fighting giant robots” was a theme largely explored
only in anime, but this film marks the first large-scale live action Hollywood
production to tackle this genre. The film is being directed by Guillermo Del
Toro, a connoisseur of Japanese anime and special effects who has received
enthusiastic worldwide recognition for his previous work (“Pan’s Labyrinth”,
“Hellboy” series). Footage of the film was revealed at Comic-Con International,
which took place last year in San Diego, as well as the New York Comic Con,
where attending fans voiced their awe over the intensity of the action
sequences and the high quality of the character designs. Attention was also
given to Rinko Kikuchi, who has engaged in film work around the world,
particularly in Hollywood, and will be appearing in the film as a co-pilot of
one of the giant fighting Jaegers, and Mana Ashida, who will be making her
Hollywood debut in this film. This unprecedented, mega-scale title, featuring
meticulously detailed images and a story of epic proportions, will be completely
unveiled in Summer 2013.”
On
a personal note, almost all movie adaptations to video games have a problem,
which is that they simply re-tell the story of the movie. Let’s hope that this
game will add something to the story in an interesting way.
Pacific
Rim Official Synopsis:
When legions of monstrous creatures, known
as Kaiju started rising from the sea, a gigantic war breaks out to
save Humanity and its resources from possible annihilation. To stop these
monsters and win the war, a special type of weapon is developed, the Jaegers,
massive robots that are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are
connected in a neural bridge. The Jaegercan fight one on one with
the Kaiju since they are of the same size and power, but not even
they are proving to be powerful enough to stop the
relentless Kaiju from taking over the world and wipe out Humanity. On
the verge of certain defeat, the allied forces defending mankind have but
little choice but to turn to two of the most unlikely heroes on the force, an
untested trainee Mako Mori played by Rinko
Kikuchi and Raleigh Becket a washed up former pilot, played
by Charlie Hunnam. Both of them (Rinko and Raleigh) are teamed to drive
the legendary but apparently completely obsoleteJaeger from the past. The
two unlikely heroes became the last hope for mankind as they alone fight
the Kaiju for the future of all Humanity.
Directing the movie is the brilliant
director Guillermo del Toro, who brought us both Hellboy movies
and Pan's Labyrinth. Starring in this anticipated film
are Charlie Hunnam from Sons of Anarchy, Ron
Perlman fromHellboy, Idris Elba from Luther, Charlie
Day from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Clifton Collins
Jr. from Star Trek, Robert Maillet from Sherlock
Holmes, Rinko Kikuchi from The Brothers Bloom, Heather
Doerksen fromBattlestar Galactica and Brad William
Henke from Justified. The movie is due to arrive at theaters on
the 12th of July of this summer.
