In
a recent screening of the 1981 John Carpenter’s Escape From New York, actor and
star of the film, Kurt Russell answered to some Q&A from the audience.
Here
is the recap from what Russell had to say at the Q&A:
-
Form him, Snake Plissken was the most iconic character he had ever play and he
was very happy to play the part despite the fact that he wasn’t the studio
first pick for the role and that John Carpenter had to fight for him to get the
part.
-
One of the things Russell love about Snake is the fact that he is truly a bad
guy. Originally there was going to be a scene featuring Snake, in which he had
to decide between helping a friend or escaping the police, the scene was cut by
Carpenter and Russell said that he was happy that it was, because without it
Snake is a true bad guy.
-
The wardrobe was carefully thought out and he had a big part in what he would
have to wear.
-
When talking about the snake tattoo, Russell said, “If you’re going to have a tattoo of a cobra, that’s where it
should be.”
-
The low tone in Snake’s voice came because they thought that Snake was the kind
of guy that didn’t need to raise his voice to make himself heard.
-
Russell said that he knew that the character was going to work, when we was
shooting in a sketchy neighborhood with some sketchy characters of its own, and
one night while he was getting ready to shoot a scene he found himself alone
with some of this characters, whom look at him, with the eye patch and gun and
quickly backed off.
-
When filming the fight scene in the boxing match, his opponent was a real
wrestler named Ox, who apparently knocked out all of the stunt doubles and when
it came the time for Russell to kill Ox, he aimed for a nail that was sticking
out of a block, which was tapped to Ox’s head. Like anyone, at this point Ox
was getting nervous, but Russell hit his mark on the first try.
-
Russell and Carpenter are still good friends. When asked how they became
friends, Russell said that it was one of those things, where they just became
friends, not really knowing why.
-
One day Russell peeked through the lens and thought: “What is he thinking?” after seeing how the shoot was
set up. It was so different that he never had seen it before.
-
When asked about a possible remake, Russell said that a remake should be done
to movies that are flawed. When asked about who should play his character,
Russell answered by saying that: “There’s one thing I can tell you about
Snake – he’s an American.”
