With
Marvel phase 2 starting to take shape, with Iron Man 3, Guardians of the
Galaxy, Captain America: Winter Soldier and Thor: Dark World on the way, a
simple statement to MTV by Kevin Feige, Marvel’s Movie Boss, open the doors for
a lot of fans, including yours truly, for all the possibilities. Kevin Feige
already spoke of some of the projects being planned for phase 3, which should
begin in 2016. Of all the projects out there, Feige spoke of the Ant-Man and
Doctor Strange books, so there is a possibility that those should be the firsts
of this new batch of movies to arrive on theaters.
Ant-Man
“Ant-Man
is definitely part of Phase Three,”
“Like
Iron Man 3, it’s certainly set in the Marvel Universe, but it’s also through
the lens of Edgar Wright — which is the only reason we’re making the movie…
It’s very much an Ant-Man origin movie from the perspective of Edgar Wright and
his co-writer Joe Cornish. It will, of course, be firmly planted in the MCU,
but a different corner than we’ve seen before.”
Doctor
Strange
“He’s
a great, original character, and he checks the box off this criteria that I
have,”
“He’s
totally different from anything else we have, just like Guardians Of The
Galaxy. He’s totally different from anything we’ve done before, as is Ant-Man,
which keeps us excited.”
ANT-MAN
In
development since 2004, by director Edgar Wright and writer Joe Cornish, the
movie was first announced in 2008 and by August of 2010 director Edgar Wright
said:
“I
had a copy of the Tales to Astonish comic from the early 60s, which has his
origin story. And I’ve been a fan ever since. I think it’s a really interesting
high-concept idea. [...] I know there’s a big stigma attached to it, mostly
because every movie about shrinking has been about people in peril. I think
it’d be great to do a shrinking film about a bad-ass secret agent. [...] Even
something like The Incredible Shrinking Man, which is a fantastic film, is
about a guy in trouble. But this is going to be nothing like that. It’s
essentially a high-tech spy heist film with somebody with a very particular
power.”
So
it’s possible that the character of Ant-Man will be a modified version of The
Irredeemable Ant-Man #1, by Eric O’Grady.
On
July 2011, the movie entered in pre-production with production to start in
2013, and although no cast was announced yet, the movie is schedule for release
on the 6th of November 2015.
DOCTOR
STRANGE
The
Doctor Strange movie is been planned since April 2005 and in 2008 it entered in
development, only to stop. Officialy in development since 2010, writers Thomas
Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer were hired to write the script. According
to Feige the movie was to be a part of Marvel’s phase 2 but was later moved to
phase 3.
“Our
next step, will be to introduce a character outside the Avengers’ world.”
"Ant-Man
is definitely part of Phase Three. [...] Doctor Strange, which I’ve been
talking about for years, is definitely one of them.“
To
play the Sorcerer Supreme, they are considering actor Patrick Dempsey, but
there isn’t a released date for the movie yet, but it should be in 2016.
But
wait... there are more, Black Panther, Iron Fist, The Inhumans, The Black
Widow, The Incredible Hulk 2 and The Avengers 3.
BLACK
PANTHER
This
movie is being planned since 2005 and has been in development since 2011. Kevin
Feige thinks “Black Panther and Wakanda has some amazing potential to be a
feature film.” and Marvel legend Stan Lee confirmed in November of last year,
that “Black Panther is being developed...”. As Doctor Strange there is no cast,
but some names have been popping up, like Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Gbenga
Akinnagbe and Anthony Mackie, although Mackie will be portraying The Falcon in
the upcoming Captain America: The Winter Soldier. There is no release date
either, probably in 2016.
IRON
FIST
Now,
this movie was planned and developed by Artisan Entertainment in 2000. From
2002 until 2007 it was in pre-production, but was suddenly dropped and was
"in planning" at Marvel Studio in 2009 when it re-entered development
in 2010 with Rich Wilkes has the writer. Kevin Pennington is being considered
for the role of Danny Rand aka Iron Fist. The story for this adaptation will be
inspired by the Ed Brubaker-Matt Fraction series. No date for release.
THE
INHUMANS
All
is known about the project is that is in development since 2011 and that Stan
Lee said also in November of last year that "Black Panther is being
developed... The Inhumans... will eventually be made into movies.". At this point there is no release date.
THE
BLACK WIDOW
This
movie is in a league of its own, since the character is a part of The Avengers
universe unlike the others above. That aside Kevin Feige told in 2010, before
The Avengers premiered that "We've already started discussions with
Scarlett about the idea of a solo movie and have begun putting together
concepts, but The Avengers comes first.". So let’s wait and see.
THE
INCREDIBLE HULK 2
This
project shares the same fate as the Black Widow project, but this time Feige
said that “We certainly are not even going to attempt that until Avengers
2.". If they are going to use the arc of Planet Hulk and World War Hulk is
still an unknown.
MARVEL'S
THE AVENGERS 3
It’s
still too early in the game to be thinking about that. There is still the
matter of The Avengers 2 movie and all of the solo movies of each individual
character. What is known is that the movie already has been planned.
