Two-time Oscar
nominated actor Jude Law is poised to play young Albus Dumbledore in the
anticipated Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them sequel.
With the story taking
place several decades prior to the events of the first Harry Potter movie, Law's
Dumbledore isn't the Headmaster at Hogwarts yet, instead we will see the iconic
character still acting as the wizarding school's Transfiguration teacher.
The sequel will move
into a darker territory, where Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) and others will be
forced to make a decision on where they stand, the side of good and oppose Gellert
Grindelwald's (Johnny Depp) despicable ideology or the side of evil and follow Grindelwald's
plans to presumably eradicate Muggles and No-Majs, whom he believes are inferior
to wizards.
"Jude Law is a phenomenally talented actor whose
work I have long admired, and I’m looking forward to finally having the
opportunity to work with him," said director David Yates. "I know he
will brilliantly capture all the unexpected facets of Albus Dumbledore as J.K.
Rowling reveals this very different time in his life."
In the Potter universe, Dumbledore and Grindelwald became
close friends while staying at Goderic's Hollow during their late teenage
years. Through their shared love of powerful magical artifacts, their relationship
grew, and Dumbledore had what appears
to be an unrequited love for Grindelwald. This and other disagreements leads to a grand
clash between the two.
Unfortunately, none
are teenagers in the forthcoming film, so we shouldn't expect this part of
their lives to play out on the big screen, the ramifications of their contentious
relationship on the other hand we might.
Production on Fantastic
Beasts and Where to Find Them 2 begins this summer for a November 16, 2018
release.
