It is extraordinary that Dwayne Johnson, one of the most in-demand actors
currently working in Hollywood, hasn't landed a leading role in a superhero franchise
yet. He has both the talent, and body to play almost any mainstream hero/villain
out there, and thus far nothing, and there is a good reason for that. Since
2014, Johnson has been attached to Warner Bros.' DC Extended Universe, where he
will play the villain/antihero Black Adam in the Shazam movie. However, in the
aftermath of Suicide Squad and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice the studio adjusted
their initial plan for the shared universe, meaning that the plans for Shazam
have also changed.
Back in January, a report surfaced claiming that Warner Bros. was looking
to split Shazam into two movies, one focusing on the titular superhero, and
another centered on his nemesis Black Adam. Well, speaking to MTV, Johnson
confirmed that was indeed the case.
"We’ve had great discussions with Geoff Johns
over there at DC. This is a really, really fun, cool time for DC right now
because they’re really in a process of truly world building, and building out.
We’re seeing that with Wonder Woman and Aquaman, and we have a few surprises down the line. So what
we decided to do was actually create a scenario where Black Adam is having his
standalone movie, Captain Marvel/Shazam will have his standalone movie, and
then we’re building our world up that way and then we can come together at some
other point."
Furthermore, the actor teases
that a big announcement is coming our way very soon.
"We have a surprise for Black Adam coming up. I
can’t tell you what it is, but it is gonna be… it’s gonna be fucking
awesome."
Given Johnson's packed schedule it is hard to imagine
that we will be getting a Black Adam standalone movie anytime soon. The actor
is about to start filming Rampage, after which he will move on to the action
blockbuster Skyscraper. The actor is also expected to start shooting Jungle
Cruise for Disney in the spring of 2018, and has in the pipeline the sequel to
San Andreas, and Shane Black's long-in-development Doc Savage.
Having said that, if Warner is keen on having a Black
Adam movie in theaters soon rather than later, they could perhaps start
production after Johnson wraps Jungle Cruise for a 2020 release.
