The Wolf of Wall
Street and Suicide Squad star Margot Robbie is set to play the lead role in
Sony Pictures' recently acquired drama Marian, a Robin Hood offshoot centered
on the titular maiden.
From a spec script by
Pete Barry, the film will be produced by former Sony Pictures co-chairperson Amy
Pascal, and Donald De Line.
Marian takes place
after the death of the love of her life Robin, and sees the maiden picking up
his cause and leading her people into a pivotal war for England, becoming a
legend in the process.
The project is one of
a handful of other Robin Hood-related projects currently in the works. In
addition to Marian, other projects based on the folklore character include Lionsgate's
gritty origin story starring Taron Egerton, Jamie Foxx, and Jamie Dornan, which
is set for a March 2018 premiere; a futuristic take on the well-known story
from visual effects supervisor Hasraf 'HaZ' Dulull will start filming later
this year; and a modern-day television series titled A Burglar's Guide to the
City is also in development with Alex Kurtzman and Justin Lin at CBS.
As for Robbie, she is
currently working on the biopic I, Tonya, about the disgraced figure skater
Tonya Harding. She is also set to reprise her Suicide Squad character in a
standalone film titled Gotham City Sirens. Furthermore, Robbie is also set to
star in the A.A. Milne film on the origin of Winnie the Pooh, and the
live-action/CGI hybrid film Peter Rabbit.
