Mel Gibson, who
recently saw his latest film Hacksaw Ridge receive six Oscar nominations
including Best Picture and Best Director, is reportedly being courted by Warner
Bros. to helm Suicide Squad 2.
According to THR,
while the director is familiarizing himself with the material, Warner is also
looking at other directors including Swedish filmmaker Daniel Espinosa
("Child 44," "Life").
David Ayer, who
directed the first movie, is not returning to direct the sequel. He is instead
set to direct Gotham City Sirens, the Suicide Squad spinoff centered on the
female villains of the DCEU such as Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn.
Panned by critics,
and divisive among fans, Suicide Squad grossed $745 million worldwide.
For Gibson this is a
complete 180 on his career after burning it into the ground in the 2000s after racist
and anti-Semitic comments.
