Matt
Reeves, who just last week was reported as being in talks with Warner Bros. to direct
Ben Affleck in the upcoming Batman solo film, has now exited negotiations.
It's
unclear what happened between both parties, but it's reasonable to assume that
in their eagerness to get the Batman solo project off the ground as quickly as
possible, Warner pressured Reeves, who is currently deep in post-production on
War for the Planet of the Apes, into signing on without having enough time to put
his stamp on the project.
However,
according to THR, there is a chance Warner and Reeves could resume negotiations
once the dust settles and those involved have cooled their heads.
Affleck was originally attached to direct the movie, but dropped out from
directing after much deliberation on his part.
"Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best
performance I can give," Affleck said in a statement. "It has become
clear that I cannot do both jobs [acting in and directing the film] to the
level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner
in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film."
In case Reeves ultimately decides that he is not interested, Warner has
other directors they are considering for the job including Ridley Scott and
Fede Alvarez, but Reeves is the studio's top pick.
Affleck is still onboard as both star and producer. The Batman was
co-written by Affleck and DC Films co-head Geoff Johns.
