2017 Oscars Winners

Hollywood's biggest day of the year has arrived. The 89th Academy Awards have started with Jimmy Kimmel hosting.

La La Land fell short of its fourteen nominations with just six wins including best director for Damien Chazelle, best cinematography for Linus Sandgren, and best leading actress for Emma Stone. On the other hand, Moonlight, which received eight nominations managed to get three key statuettes, specifically for best supporting actor for Mahershala Ali, best adapted screenplay for Tarell Alvin McCraney and Barry Jenkins, and (after a colossal oopsy daisy) best film.

Other key wins included Casey Affleck winning the best actor award for his performance in Manchester by the Sea, and writer/director Kenneth Lonergan receiving the Oscar for his original screenplay for the same film.

As expected, Viola Davis won the best supporting actress Oscar for her leading role in Denzel Washington's Fences, and Iranian director Asghar Farhadi (who wasn't at the ceremony as a form of protest to Donald Trump's Muslim ban but left a powerful note) didn't saw his drama The Salesman receive the award for best foreign film.
