Sonequa Martin-Green, who plays Sasha
on hit zombie series The Walking Dead, has been cast in the lead role in CBS'
upcoming Star Trek television series Discovery where she will play the
lieutenant commander of the Starship Discovery.
According to EW, Martin-Green will
remain onboard AMC's zombie drama, however, with The Walking Dead's production
set in Georgia and Star Trek soon to start filming in Toronto, it seems unlikely
that she could sustain both productions and future promotional rounds at the
same time, specially being the lead in one of them.
Martin-Green
joins previously announced Doug Jones as
Lt. Saru, a Starfleet Science Officer who happens to be a new alien species in
the Star Trek universe; Michelle Yeoh as
Captain Georgious, the Starfleet Captain aboard the Starship Shenzhou; Anthony
Rapp as Lt. Stamets, and astromycologist, i.e. a fungus expert, who is the
Starfleet Science Officer aboard the Starship Discovery; Chris Obi as T'Kuvma, a Klingon leader seeking to unite the various
Klingon houses; Mary Chieffo as the L'Rell, the Battle Deck Commander of
a Klingon ship; and Shazad Latif, Kol, a Klingon Commanding Officer and protégé
of T'Kuvma.
Bryan Fuller, who stepped down from his role as
showrunner, co-wrote the first hour of the show with Alex Kurtzman, while
Nicholas Meyer, who has deep ties to
the franchise having written Wrath of Khan, The Voyage Home, and The
Undiscovered Country, penned the second hour.
Star Trek: Discovery premieres on CBS All Access on May of 2017.
