Acclaimed
Broadway writer and director Alex Timbers is in talks with Disney to direct
Cruella, a live-action origin story about the famous villain from the classic children's story 101 Dalmatians.
Golden
Globe and SAG nominee (and possibly Oscar) Emma Stone ("La La Land")
is attached to play the role.
According
to Deadline, Disney is keen to get Cruella into production as early as early
next year with Timbers set to direct from a script by Jez Butterworth ("Get
on Up," "Edge of Tomorrow"), and Marc Platt and Andrew Gunn
producing.
The
two-time Tony nominated writer and director was previously set to direct a
stage adaptation of Frozen on Broadway for Disney, but that project fell
through last summer.
At
this time, it is unclear when exactly Cruella will go into production since
Timbers is about to go into rehearsals for Joan of Arc: Into The Fire, his
second collaboration with Talking Heads' David Byrne after the hit Here Lies
Love about Imelda Marcos, the widow of Filipino dictator Ferdinand Marcos. The
director is also working on the stage adaptation of Moulin Rouge with Baz
Luhrmann.
Timbers'
is the co-creator, writer, and producer on the acclaimed and award-winning
Amazon comedy series Mozart in the Jungle.
