Even though it takes
place in the same Wizarding World as the boy who lived, Fantastic Beats and
Where to Find Them is set several decades prior to those events, in a different
continent, and follows a newish character in Eddie Redmayne's Newt Scamander. However,
as many predicted, or at least hoped, this new franchise will indeed include
some key names from the original Harry Potter films.
Speaking to Screen
Rant, director David Yates confirmed that a young Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore
will in fact appear in the next Fantastic Beasts installment, and that casting for
the role is already underway.
"In the second
movie Dumbledore comes back. He’s got a couple of good scenes with Newt… We’re
discussing who would play Dumbledore, any suggestions would be good. [Laughs]"
Details on the yet
untitled Fantastic Beasts sequel are (as expected) being kept under wraps, but
it has been confirmed that it will move "deeper into an increasingly dark
time for the wizarding world."
What that "dark
time" is remains to be seen, however it could perfectly indicate Gallert
Grindelwald's rise to power within the wizarding community. In both the books and movies,
Grindewald was a good friend of Dumbledore when they were younger, (as well as
the love of his life according to Rowling) who ran away with the Elder Wand
after the death of Dumbledore's sister. Furthermore, according to Potter lore,
Grindewald went on a terror spree during the 1920s (when Beasts takes place).
Johnny Depp (53 years-old) has
recently joined Fantastic Beasts 2, and although Warner Bros. has yet to reveal whom the
actor is playing, many believe he is set to play Grindewald.
Richard Harris played Dumbledore in
the first two installments of the Harry Potter franchise before sadly passing
away. Michael Gambon took over the role for the remainder of the franchise.
The Fantastic Beasts and Where to
Find Them sequel is expected to enter production early next year for a November
16, 2018 release.
