Even though The Raid
and The Raid 2 place him on the pantheon of great action/thriller directors,
the truth is that Gareth Evans did not breakthrough like many (including yours
truly) expected. In fact, not much was heard of the talented filmmaker, who
between the above mentioned sequel and now, only wrote and directed a short released earlier in the year, about a young warrior having to prove himself in a fight against two very
dangerous assassins.
Now, according to
THR, Evans is back, and he is set to both write and direct Apostle, a period
thriller about a "man who travels to a remote island in search of his
missing sister," who has been taken against her will by a religious cult. Unfortunately,
for them this man is ready to wage a war to save his sister and discover the secrets
behind the cult.
XYZ Films, Severn
Screen, and Evan's One More One Production will produce the project, with XYZ
handling international sales.
Production is
expected to start in the U.K. on March of 2017.
