Kung Fu Panda and Little Prince
director Mark Osborne has joined Warner Bros. upcoming animated adaptation of Jeff
Smith's Eisner-winning comic series Bone, which he will direct from a script
written by him and Adam Kline.
"Bone is very special and unconventional because
it blends elements together that you don’t necessarily expect — soft, little
comic characters and epic high stakes fantasy adventure," Osborne tells The Hollywood
Reporter. "To carry this
into the cinematic realm presents both an opportunity to represent what readers
of all ages have loved about the series, while pushing animated storytelling
into exciting and different areas."
To be produced by Dan Lin's Lin Pictures and Animal
Logic's Zareh Nalbandian, the plan is to turn the comic series into a trilogy
of films.
In
Bone, after being run out of Boneville, the three Bone cousins, Fone Bone,
Phoney Bone and Smiley Bone are separated and lost in a vast uncharted desert.
One by one they find their way into a deep forested valley filled with
wonderful and terrifying creatures.
Published
between 1991 and 2004, Bone was later rediscovered by a new generation of eager
fans when Scholastic re-released it as a graphic novel.
"As source
material goes, Jeff's epic is something of a unicorn; mythic, whimsical, and
pure in equal measure," said Kline.
P.J. Hogan ("Muriel's
Wedding") was at one point attached to direct the adaptation with Patrick
Sean Smith ("Greek") set to write the script.
