Johnny Depp has joined the cast of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
2, which David Yates will direct from a script by franchise author and creator
J.K. Rowling.
Deadline broke the news, and although details on Depp's character are at
this time nonexistent, the news outlet reckons he might just briefly appear in
the first installment of the new wizarding franchise, which Warner Bros. will
drop in theaters this November 18.
Despite the lack of information on what role Depp will play in the film or
franchise, speculation is likely to grow rather rapidly thanks to recent
comments made by both Rowling and Yates, whom last month hinted that Gellert
Grindewald will be playing a major role in future Fantastic Beasts movies.
In both the books and
movies, Grindewald was a good friend of Albus Dumbledore when they were
teenagers, as well as the love of his life according to Rowling, who ran away
with the Elder Wand after the death of Dumbledore's sister. Furthermore,
according to Potter lore, Grindewald went on a terror spree during the 1920s
(when Beasts takes place), and chances are he could end up becoming the main
antagonist in the new franchise. Whether Depp will play him remains to be seen.
Jamie Campbell Bower played the character in a couple of flashback sequences
in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1.
In Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the
wizarding world’s top magizoologist Newt Scamander stops in New York
following his travels to find, document, and protect rare and endangered
magical creatures that he stores in his magical briefcase. As you may expect
the briefcase opens and some of the creatures escape threatening not only the
lives of New Yorkers but also the balance between wizards and the No-Maj
(American Muggles).
The Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them sequel is expected to enter
production early next year (assuming the first movie is a hit) for a November
16, 2018 release.
