Boardwalk Empire and
Marvel's Agent Carter actor Shea Whigham is joining the cast of Netflix's Death
Note.
Directed by Adam
Wingard, Death Note is an adaptation of a horror manga of the same
name created by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata that
centers on a student named Light Turner(Nat Wolff), who discovers a
supernatural notebook that gives him the ability to kill anyone he chooses
simply by writing that person's name on it. When Light decides to take upon
himself to eradicate the World from evil, a reclusive police officer known only
as L appears and a game of cat-and-mouse ensues.
Whigham, who we will
next see on HBO's Vice Principals, Star Trek Beyond, and Kong: Skull Island, will
play internal affairs officer and Light's father James Turner.
Roy Lee, Dan
Li, Jason Hoffs, and Masi Oka are producing the project.
Though the first time the
property has been adapted into a western market, Death Note has been put on film
once or twice before. In 2006, Ohba and Obata's creation was adapted into a two-part
film series in Japan.
Premiering in 2017, Death Note
also stars Margaret Qualley as Mia Stutton, Keith Stanfield as L, and Michael
Shamus Wiles as Police Captain Russel.
