Dane Cook is joining the
cast of the upcoming TV adaptation of Neil Gaiman's acclaimed fantasy novel
American Gods on Starz.
The actor will play Robbie
in the series. The character is Shadow Moon's (Ricky Whittle) best friend, who
holds on to his job while he is in prison and who provides a shoulder for Shadow's
wife Laura (Emily Browning) to cry on while Moon is away.
The series centers on a war brewing between old and
new gods: the traditional gods of biblical and
mythological roots from around the world steadily losing believers
to an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society’s modern
love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs.
Its protagonist, Shadow Moon (Whittle), is an ex-con
who becomes bodyguard and traveling partner to Mr. Wednesday (Ian
McShane), a conman who in reality is one of the older gods, on a
cross-country mission to gather his forces in preparation to
battle the new deities.
American Gods also stars
Gillian Anderson, Peter Stormare, Yetide Badaki, Orlando Jones, Demore Barnes,
Bruce Langley, Crispin Glover, Jonathan Tucker, Christopher Obi, Cloris Leachman,
Mouse Kraish, and Pablo Schreiber
Hannibal's Brian Fuller and Smallville's Michael Green are both
attached as writers and showrunners, with David Slade ("Hannibal")
directing the pilot as well as any future episodes.
