Gangster Squad screenwriter Will Beall is rejoining
Aquaman after having been a part of the writing effort to develop a script
for the Warner Bros. project.
In 2014, before James Wan had signed on to helm the superhero
project, Warner Bros., in an effort to get to ball rolling, put in practice the
controversial screenwriting method called dual tracking. The idea is to have multiple
writers essentially compete against one another, writing multiple scripts at
the same time, with the studio then picking either the best one or the best
parts of each to craft the final screenplay.
Beall was one of such writers, and he competed against
fellow screenwriter Kurt Johnstad ("300") for a credit on the movie,
but when Wan signed on to direct the property, he brought with him additional competition
in the name of David Leslie Johnson, Wan's Conjuring 2 scribe.
However, it seems that following Batman v Superman's
poor critical reception, Aquaman went through some changes in order to get the
story in top shape, and is now moving forward with Beall attached to write the
final script. This time the writer will be working alone from a detailed
treatment written by Wan, and co-head of DC Films, Geoff Johns.
Premiering on July 27, 2018, Aquaman stars Jason Momoa
in the titular role, Amber Heard as his wife Mera, and Willem Dafoe as his
advisor Vulko.
