This Friday on July
22, Star Trek Beyond will likely be a bittersweet experience for many fans of
both the new franchise as well as of the talented Anton Yelchin, who sadly
passed away just last month in a bizarre car accident.
But, the world keeps
turning, and with J.J. Abrams and crew already looking ahead towards the next
installment in the franchise, Star Trek 4, what will happen to Yelchin's Chekov?
"I
would say there’s no replacing him. There’s no recasting. I can’t possibly
imagine that, and I think Anton deserves better," Abrams told in an
exclusive interview to Postmedia Network (via Toronto Sun).
Although
it is good to hear that Yelchin's Chekov will not be re-cast in future films, the problem remains: How
to explain the character's disappearance from the USS Enterprise?
"How
will they write Chekov out of the film series? Will they kill him off?"
Abrams adds, "I have thought about it, we’re working on it, and it’s too
early to talk about it."
Star
Trek Beyond will not be the last we see of Yelchin. Before he died the actor
wrapped up several projects including Rememory, a sci-fi drama also starring
Peter Dinklage and Julia Ormond, the family drama We Don't Belong Here with Catherine
Keener, and the drama thriller Thoroughbred co-starring Olivia Cooke.
