John Boyega To Star In Pacific Rim Sequel

Star Wars: The Force Awakens star John Boyega has announced that he has joined the cast of Legendary's upcoming Pacific Rim sequel.

Although plot details under wraps, several sources say that Boyega's lead role in the film is that of the son of Idris Elba's Stacker Pentecost character from the first film.

"It is undeniable that with all his talent and natural charm, John stands out amongst today's generation of young leading men," said Mary Parent, Legendary’s Vice Chairman of Worldwide Production.

"I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox," Guillermo del Toro added. "The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job."

Steven S. DeKnight ("Daredevil") takes over the directing duties from writer/director Guillermo del Toro, who will be producing the project alongside Thomas Tull, Mary Parent, and Jon Jashni. Boyega will also be producing the film alongside his UpperRoom Productions company partner Femi Oguns.

Starring Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, and Ron Perlman, the first Pacific Rim directed by del Toro grossed over $400 million worldwide.
