Academy Award winning
actress Brie Larson ("Room") has reportedly jump to the top of the
list to play the titular superhero in Marvel's Captain Marvel, the studio's
first film featuring a female leading protagonist.
Marvel's Guardians of
the Galaxy co-writer Nicole Perlman, and Pixar's Inside Out co-writer Meg
LeFauve penned the script. The project doesn't have a director currently
attached to it yet, but it is said that the studio is looking to get a female
director with names like Jennifer Kent ("The Babadook") and Niki Caro
("McFarland, USA") being considered.
Larson's situation is
unclear with some sources claiming Marvel is strongly considering the actress
while other claim that both parties have already started to negotiate.
Several characters
have used the Captain Marvel alias. For the film, Marvel picked the most recent
superhero to use the name, Carol Danvers. In the comics, Danvers is an air
force pilot whose DNA merged with that of an alien superhero that was
protecting her from an ancient alien weapon. Armed with super strength, super
speed, flight, energy projection, cosmic awareness, and other powers, Danvers became the
superhero known as Captain Marvel.
Captain Marvel opens
in theaters on March 8, 2019.
