Academy Award winning actor Russell Crowe is in early
talks to join Tom Cruise and Kingsman breakout star Sofia Boutella in Alex Kurtzman's
The Mummy, the first film in Universal's shared monster universe that will also
include The Invisible Man starring Johnny Depp, Dracula, the Creature from the Black
Lagoon, and many others.
Details on Crowe's character are vague at this time,
but according to Variety, the actor is in talks to play a Dr. Jekyll-type
character in the film before jumping to his own monster movie. Apparently,
sources say that some of Universal's classic movie monsters will make cameos in
The Mummy before making their way into their own solo movies.
Kurtzman and Chris Morgan are spearheading the monster
universe for Universal.
Set in the present day with Boutella starring as the titular
monster, The Mummy also stars Jake Johnson ("Jurassic World"),
Annabelle Wallis ("Peaky Blinders"), Courtney B. Vance ("American
Crime Story"), Marwan Kenzari ("The Loft"), and Dylan Smith ("EastEnders").
The Mummy opens in theaters on June 9, 2017.
