Deadpool fans living in China will have a near
impossible chance of seeing the anti-hero's antics on the big screen. According
to local reports, the movie based on a Marvel character and produced by 20th
Century Fox, has been denied permission to screen in the country due to its
violence, nudity, and graphic language.
China
has no rating system so it is up to the State Administration of Press,
Publication, Radio, Film and Television to oversee all film imports, giving permission
and or ordering changes (censorship). A Hollywood Reporter source close to the media
regulator confirmed the decision to deny Deadpool's screening in the country.
On
their end, sources close to the movie say that they can't re-cut Deadpool and remove
the material considered offensive by Chinese law since it would cause problems
with the plot of the movie.
The decision will effectively shape Deadpool's overall
box-office gross since China has been a very import market for the genre, with
Avengers: Age of Ultron making $240 million last summer, and Ant-Man grossing
just over $100 million.
Directed by Tim Miller, Deadpool stars Ryan Reynolds, Ed Skrein, Gina Carano, Morena Baccarin, Brianna
Hildebrand, T.J. Miller, Andre Tricoteux, and Leslie
Uggams.
Deadpool opens February 12.
