Back in October,
Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy stated that she would like to see a woman
direct one of the upcoming Star Wars movies, or better yet make that singular
since there is only one Star Wars movie currently waiting for a director, and
that would be one of the Anthology movies.
There are plenty of
talented voices currently working in both film and TV that could call Star Wars
her home, so any of them could potentially direct a Star Wars film, but for J.J.
Abrams one filmmaker would be perfect, Selma director Ava DuVernay, who has
been a prominent voice in the gender and racial discussion.
"One name that
immediately comes to mind is Ava DuVernay, who I thought did just a mind-blowing
great job with Selma," said
Abrams in an interview to Yahoo! Movies. "And getting to know her a little
since that movie… she is such a fan of genre films and storytelling."
From previous comments,
we know that DuVernay isn't opposed to big-budget epics, and having her direct
a Star Wars film, whether from the main storyline or a spinoff, would be
fantastic. But, and there is always a but, I think that the filmmaker would
clash with Lucasfilm the same way she did with Marvel, where she was offered
Black Panther but declined the offer due to creative differences, saying that
it wouldn't be an Ava DuVernay movie.
Like Marvel with
their Cinematic Universe, Lucasfilm has a detailed long-term plan for Star Wars
that encompasses everything (games, books, toys, etc…), and it is one that I believe
they probably won't deviate too much from.
But we will see if
Abrams' suggestion reaches someone higher up.
