Superstar Dwayne
Johnson as signed on to play the lead in a throwback action comedy from Easy
A's director Will Gluck and The Expendables' screenwriter Dave Callaham. The
untitled project is said to borrow from such classics of the genre as Lethal
Weapon, 48Hrs., and Midnight Run.
Johnson will produce
the project through his Seven Bucks banner alongside his San Andreas producer
Beau Flynn, and Gluck himself.
The action comedy
landed on New Line after a bidding war with three other studios. The project is
being fast tracked in the hopes that it will develop into a franchise. New
Line's previous collaboration with Johnson and Flynn was their biggest hit of
2015. The disaster flick San Andreas grossed $474 million worldwide, so it's understandable
why the studio is keen on get the ball rolling, that and the fact that Johnson
has a very busy schedule ahead of him.
Johnson has a series
of movies on the pipeline. The actor has the monster action movie Rampage,
which will see him reteam with Flynn and director Brad Peyton. The Baywatch
reimagining with Zac Efron and Alexandra Daddario, Disney's Moana, Furious 8,
and Shazam!
