Ryan Gosling may be on his way
to step into the shoes of American hero Neil Armstrong in First Man, Damien
Chazelle's (Whiplash) upcoming biopic of the astronaut.
According to Deadline,
Universal Pictures is courting the actor to play Armstrong, who in 1969 became
the first human to set foot on the moon.
Talks are still in its early
stages but Gosling's decision may come down to whether he would want to reteam Chazelle
or not. The actor just wrapped up the musical La La Land, the director's follow-up
project to Whiplash.
The film, which Spotlight
co-writer Josh Singer is currently writing, is based on James Hansen's
biography of the famed astronaut, First Man: A Life of Neil A. Armstrong.
Speaking to Collider last
year, Chazelle revealed that he hesitates in calling the project a biopic. "It’s a mission
movie. It’s purely about the landing… It will cover about six years. It’ll
start with him joining NASA and will end in ’69 with the landing. So it’s
purely a process movie, it’s a movie about building up to that achievement."
