The run to see who will play Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel in the
upcoming Marvel movie(s) is getting more and more competitive as time passes.
Many names have been thrown into the casting hat for the movie, and now a new
has landed on top of the pile. What began has a joke on Twitter turned into
mild sensation when a user of the social media recommended Olivia Wilde for
Captain Marvel, and her Meadowland director Reed Morano to the directing chair.
Wilde responded with a "Oh hell yea. Let's DO this!", while Morano
simply gave an enthusiastic "Um…hell yes!".
Now, speaking to Cinema Blend after a screening of Meadowland, for which
both Morano and Wilde have received much praised for, Wilde offered a more in-depth
response to the idea of playing the superhero.
"I’m a big fan of superhero films, and I have so much respect for the
Marvel Cinematic Universe. The thing with female superheroes is that, in order
to be powerful, they are flawless. The idea of kick-ass power lacks a certain
nuance, at times. There is something to be said for a female director working
to create a female superhero that perhaps [has] a little more complexity."
We will have to wait until
March 25, 2016 to see how Wonder Woman was written in Warner Bros. Batman v
Superman: Dawn of Justice, so we can't really judge until then. As for Marvel,
the studio has clearly been trying to give a new level of complexity to their female characters.
"Marvel has been so smart about casting unexpected people for these
roles. Look at what Robert Downey brought to Iron Man. A real, dry sense of
humor and a complexity to his hero balance. I think that the way these Marvel
heroes are written, the female superheroes included, do have complexity and
flaws. But I think when they are translated into film, the women can become
these ultimate goddesses of perfection and I would love to create a female
Marvel character who is just as unexpected and complex as some of the male
characters as Iron Man. I think that would be really cool!"
As for Morano, she agrees with Wilde's comments and adds:
"The most interesting characters are the ones who have issues and are
flawed individuals. It would be nice to give a real history, to give a real,
tangible background to this character."
Captain Marvel opens in theaters on March 8, 2019.
