Neil
Cross, the creator of BBC's crime series starring Idris Elba, Luthor, has been
tapped by 20th Century Fox to pen the upcoming remake of one of John
Carpenter's cult classics, Escape from New York.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, "the studio is aiming high with this one, hoping
to relaunch the property as it did with its Planet of the Apes movie series, which became a critical
and commercial hit," adding that "Carpenter is creatively involved
and is exec producing."
Cross also has writing credits on such shows and films
like Spooks, Mama, Doctor Who, Pacific Rim (uncredited), and Crossbones, of
which he is also a producer.
The original film was set in the distant future of
1997, and follows Snake Plissken's (Kurt Russell) forced mission to rescue the
president of the United States of America from the ruthless inmates in New York
City, which has become an inescapable prison.
