Last year or so a rumor began swirling around the web
claiming that origins stories were a thing of the past for Marvel and that the
first movie to let go of such constrictions was the upcoming Doctor Strange
starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Chiwetel Ejiofor. The report was never officially
confirmed, and now, while promoting the DVD and Blu-ray release of Avengers:
Age of Ultron, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige addressed and shut down the
rumor.
"For some reason people sometimes talked about
how we're not doing an origin story, we're bored of origin stories. I think
people are bored of origin stories they've seen before or origin stories that
are overly familiar," Feige told IGN. "Doctor Strange has one of the best, most classic, most unique
origin stories of any hero we have, so why wouldn't we do that? That was sort
of always the plan. How you tell that origin, perhaps there are ways to twist
it or play with that, but for the most part, it's a gift when the comics have
something with such clarity of story and of character. That doesn't always
happen in the comics, and when it does, you use it."
Doctor Strange will be Marvel's first foray into the
world of magic after successfully establishing the world of science, but Feige assures
that the transition will be made easy because we'll experience these new
elements as Strange does and "to a certain extent" with Rachel
McAdams yet unknown role.
Tilda Swinton in Only Lovers Left Alive |
So far Marvel's casting choices have been relatively
safe when it comes to gender, but for the role of Doctor Strange's male mentor,
The Ancient One, Marvel and director Scott Derrickson have tapped Tilda Swinton
to play the part. The actress is known for her chameleon-like performances
whether it be in Orlando, Trainwreck, Snowpiercer, or The Grad Budapest Hotel,
so it's unclear if she will play the character as a woman or a man. "I
think you'll see us playing it in ways that she's played other characters that
way" said Feige. "Clearly she's a woman, but it is very
ambiguous in her portrayal."
Production is scheduled to begin this coming November
in London for a November 4, 2016 release.

Why did you leave off her role as GABRIEL in "CONSTANTINE". She was great in that one!?! Sometimes you you your prejudices by omission rather than stating it.
