It looks like
Annabelle, the spinoff/prequel to James Wan's 2013 hit horror movie The
Conjuring, is getting a follow-up. New Line's decision to move on a sequel
doesn't come as a total surprise considering the box office
numbers of the first movie, but I wonder if it is a sound one.
Although it's true
that Annabelle was a bit hit, grossing over $256M worldwide on a $6.5M budget,
it's also true that it was panned by most critics, and not particularly loved
by fans, so I wonder if the sequel will be able to achieve these same numbers
now that it doesn't have Wan's far, far superior The Conjuring backing it up,
and fans kind of know what they are in for.
According to The
Tracking Board, screenwriter Gary Dauberman is returning to write the sequel
though the same can be said for the director, John Leonetti. No release date,
cast, or new director has been announced.
