J.J. Abrams Star
Wars: The Force Awakens hasn't hit theaters yet, and LucasFilm is already
plowing ahead with the follow up. According to the studio, Rian Johnson (Looper)
will begin shooting scenes for his Episode VIII on the island of Skellig
Michael in the southern coast of Ireland later this month.
This new comes on the
heels of some rumors claiming that Abrams' was going to film additional footage
for The Force awakens on the island, but it seems that some confusion was made
when Ireland's Arts Minister Heather Humphries tried to be "low-key"
and didn't differentiate Johnson's Episode VIII from Abrams film. There were
some additional photography for Abrams' film but it happened over the summer
while some of the cast was at Disney's D23 Expo.
Skellig Michael
island is a lush rock formation home to several endangered sea birds, and the
ruins of a small monastery that is heavily controlled by UNESCO, the National
Parks and Wildlife Service, and the National Monuments Service. What role the site will have for the telling of the
new Star Wars trilogy remains to be seen, but many believe that is where Luke
Skywalker (Mark Hamill) resides.
Star Wars: Episode VIII opens on May 26, 2017.
