In 1982 Ridley Scott offered
the world a sci-fi masterpiece with his adaptation of Philip K. Dick's Do Androids
Dream of Electric Sheep, and part of what made the film linger in the minds of
so many was the wonderfully ambiguous ending, which has since been resolved by
the filmmaker who has confirmed that Rick Deckard played by Harrison Ford is
indeed a Replicant.
However there is a
problem. We know, because the film tells us so, that Replicants have a lifespan of 4 years, so how can Harrison Ford be reprising his 27-year-old role in
the upcoming sequel set to be directed by Denis Villeneuve?
"I'm not going
to tell you," replied Scott when asked the very same question in a recent
interview to Yahoo! Movies. "You'll have to see the story. It'll all make
sense."
Scott doesn't give it
away, but it's good to hear that Deckard's miraculous longevity will be addressed,
mainly because of the timeline Scott and returning screenwriter Hampton Fancher
have set up for the sequel, but also because Ford's arc has to be resolved or
at least partially resolved if is to past the torch to Ryan Gosling.
"It was 2017, so
coming back it’ll be 2047, roughly," he says. "As young as you can
play Ryan Gosling. He’s 34, but he looks 27 when he’s doing his push-ups. So maybe 2050."
Principal photography
on Blade Runner 2 is expected to commence in 2016.
