Martial arts expert
and Hong Kong action star Donnie Yen might be donning a robe, and wielding a
lightsaber in an upcoming Star Wars film. According to the Hong Kong tabloid,
Apple Daily, Yen has landed a role in Rian Johnson's (Looper) upcoming Star
Wars: Episode VIII as a Jedi, and will begin filming scenes with Harrison Ford
next month.
Yen wasn't the only
international star the producers looked at, but with an asking price of "just"
$4 million, the actor beat other contenders such as Stephen Chow, Tony Leung
Chiu Wai, Daniel Wu, Wang Leehom, Chang Chen, and Jet Li, who reportedly asked
for $8 million.
However, Twitch Film
adds that they "heard rumblings that Gareth Edwards and his crew were circling
a number of Chinese actors for a part in his standalone film Rogue One, which
just started shooting last week."
Though he could
appear in either one, his martial arts expertise could prove to be more useful in
Johnson's Episode VIII rather than Edwards' Rogue One, which according to the
director won't include, or at least won't focus on the eternal battle between
Jedi and Sith, but on a group or Rebel soldiers stealing the plans of the first
Death Star.
Yen is best known for
his role in the Yip Man franchise, Hero, and Blade II.
