ABC and Constantin Films have just tapped McG
(Terminator Salvation) to helm the pilot and executive produce Shadowhunters,
the adaptation of Cassandra Clare's The Mortal Instruments young adult book series.
This will be Constantin
Films second stab at the property after the 2013 big screen adaptation of The
Mortal Instruments: City of Bones failed to live up to their expectations and
kick off a franchise.
Shadowhunters follows
18-year-old Clary Fray, who finds out on her birthday that she is not who she
thinks she is but rather comes from a long line of Shadowhunters – human-angel
hybrids who hunt down demons. When her mother Jocelyn is kidnapped, Clary is
thrown into the world of demon hunting with mysterious Shadowhunter Jace and
her best friend, Simon. Now living among faeries, warlocks, vampires and
werewolves, Clary begins a journey of self-discovery as she learns more about
her past and what her future may hold.
I've never read the
books, so I can't say how close to the source material the film was. However, if
the series is anything like the film then I cannot say that I'm excited to see
teenagers running around using magic to fix a problem that ultimately could have
been easily be solved on a weekly basis, and the addition of McG most certainly
doesn't fix that.
