Summit Pictures may have just added two new actors to director Peter Berg recount
of the Deepwater Horizon
tragedy. In 2010 a BP oil platform called Deepwater Horizon exploded in the
Gulf of Mexico killing 11 people, and injuring
another 17. The subsequent spill of more than 160 million gallons of oil caused
immeasurable damages to both wildlife and nearby economies that relied on the ecosystem
to survive.
According to Deadline, Teen Wolf and The Maze Runner star Dylan O'Brien
will play Caleb Holloway, one of the youngest crewmembers on the rig and a
survivor of the tragedy, who is devastated by the loss of the crew. Variety on
the other hand reports that Kurt Russell is in talks to star in an unknown role.
J.C. Chandor was initially set to direct what was intended as a contemplative
approach to the relationship between Humans and oil. However, Chandor left citing
creative differences and Peter Berg was brought in to do a more straightforward
film in the vein of his last film the Lone Survivor.
Mark Wahlberg, and Jane the Virgin actress Gina
Rodriguez are already onboard to star in the film, which is currently in pre-production in Louisiana, and is scheduled to hit theaters on
September 30, 2016.
