Roland Emmerich's sequel to the 1996 sci-fi
blockbuster, Independence Day has found its leading man. According to The
Hollywood Reporter, Jessie Usher has been cast as the son of Will Smith's
character from the original film. Michael B. Jordan was being at one point
considered for the role but things apparently fell through. Usher's best
recognized for his work on last year's sports drama When the Game Stands Tall,
and the Lebron James produced series Survivor's Remorse.
As for
Liam Hemsworth, he was previously rumored to be up for the lead character but
now it seems that he has finished negotiations to play the son-in-law of Bill
Pullman's character from the 1996 film.
Of
the previous cast Will Smith is not expected to reprise his role but Bill
Pullman is. Jeff Goldblum on the other hand has just been confirmed by the
director.

At
this time story, details are scarce, but a couple of years ago Emmerich was
dead set on doing a trilogy and shoot them back-to-back. Plans have since been
thwarted and he is focusing on just the one. At the time, the director said
that his plan was to have the aliens return for one (?) final showdown with the
Humans. Whether that story remains or not is unclear at this point.
