Last year Entertainment Weekly reported that Sony and
Marvel Studios were in conversations about adding Spider-Man to the roster of Marvel's
Cinematic Universe. At the time, and because he was such a key character in
Mark Millar, and Steve McNiven's book, the idea was to have him appear in Captain
America: Civil War.
November came and Sony got hacked, and everyone began
reporting on the leaked emails. Among them were several discussions on how to
better capitalize the opportunity of having Spider-Man appear in a Marvel
movie, but sadly Sony's stiffness in regards to who would end up controlling
the character made the negotiations fall through.
Some time passed and so did the opportunity for
Spider-Man to join Civil War, however earlier the Latino Review posted an unconfirmed
rumor stating that a new deal between Sony and Marvel had been achieved.
According to the rumor, Spidey would join the MCU not in Civil War but in the 2018
Avengers: Infinity War Part 1, and then in the 2019 Avengers: Infinity War Part
2. Sounds good? Well don't go shoot a web just yet as CBR reached Sony, who stated
that it was an "old rumor" with "no validity whatsoever".
They also reached Marvel for a comment but nor response just yet.
Keep in mind that even with Sony's denial Spider-Man
might still appear in Infinity War, maybe they are in the second round of
negotiations, maybe they are waiting for a better opportunity to reveal him (we
all know how much Marvel likes their spectacular announcements), or maybe
Spidey just won't join Marvel after all.
