Who Are The Inhumans?

A few weeks ago Marvel revealed their Phase 3 line-up. The announcement confirmed a few rumors such as the Civil War, and Ragnarok storylines, but also the addition of a few new characters to the Marvel's Cinematic Universe, like Captain Marvel, Black Panther, and the Inhumans.

I will be covering all of the above and more in coming weeks, but for now…Who Are The Inhumans?

Millions of years ago, when the battle between the Kree and Skrull empires was still in its infancy, the alien Kree established a strategic outpost in Uranus. While there, they discovered that an ancient race of aliens known as the Celestials had visited Earth and had genetically manipulated some of Earth's Homo Sapiens, giving life to an offshoot of the species, the Eternals. Armed with this information, and in an effort to rectify their stagnated gene pool, and create super soldiers to fight in the war against the Skrulls, the Kree began experimenting on Humans, by splicing Eternals DNA into Cro-Magnons. Although successful, the Kree inexplicably abandoned their experiments.

Called Inhumans, these test subjects went on to create their own technological advanced society apart from the rest of normal humanity, whom was still living in caves. Living in Attilan (the "city" has changed location on various occasions), the Inhumans began experimenting with the Terrigen Mist, a mutagenic that gave them various powers, but also long-term genetic damage. To try to mitigate the effects of the Terrigen Mist, selective breeding was put into practice.

The Inhumans society is monarchy based. The Royal Family is composed of King Black Bolt, Medusa, Karnak, Triton, Crystal, Gorgon, Maximus, Luna, and Lockjaw, whom protect and control the "lesser" beings known as the Alpha Primitives.

According to Attilan law, no one can leave the city nor involve themselves with outsiders. However, this seems to be exclusive to lowers casts, as in more than one occasion the royal family helped some of Earth's biggest superheroes teams like the Avengers, X-Men, or Fantastic Four to defeat threats that would seek to dominate the world and universe. Also some of the members of the Royal family like Crystal went on to marry Quicksilver (possible link to the MCU?).

In recent events, the Inhumans split following Ronan's plan to use them as their original Kree creators intended, weapons. Black Bolt and his royal family moved to the new Attilan, on the Blue Area of the Moon, while the rest of them dispersed to live out their own fates.

Following the War of Kings arc, where Black Bolt sacrifices himself to defeat the Shi'ar emperor, Vulcan (X-Men's Cyclops brother) who also dies, Medusa takes his place as the new ruler of the Inhumans.

Prominent Characters:
Black Bolt (King of the Inhumans) - Cosmic Awareness | Blast Power | Energy Absorption and Manipulation | Flight | Invulnerability | Longevity | Telepathy | Sonic Scream | Super Speed and Strength.

Medusa (Queen of the Inhumans) - Longevity | Prehensile Hair | Agility | Super Speed and Strength.

Gorgon (Cousin of Medusa and Black Bolt) - Longevity | Super Strength | Vibration Wave.

Chrystal (Medusa's Sister) - Blast Power | Earth Manipulation | Electricity Control | Fire Control | Flight | Heat Generation | Ice Control | Sand Manipulation | Super Strength | Water Control | Wind Bursts | Weather Control.

Karnak (Cousin of Black Bolt and Triton's brother) - Longevity | Super Speed and Strength | Ability to Sense Weak Points.

Triton (Cousin of Black Bolt and Karnak's brother) - Healing | Stealth | Sub-Mariner | Super Sight, Hearing, Speed and Strength.

Luna (Chrystal and Quicksilver's daughter) - Emotion Control | Psychic | Synaesthesia (Union of the Senses) | Telepathy.

Lockjaw ("Pet") - Longevity | Berserker Strength | Teleport | Invulnerability.

There have been some rumors that since Marvel can't use the word mutant, as it belongs to Fox and their X-Men franchise, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, whom will be making their debut in the highly anticipated Avengers: Age of Ultron, will be Inhumans instead.
