This time next year director Josh Trank's Fantastic Four
reboot will have already come out and only then we can judge if the changes
were worth it. Among the various differences between the film and source
material, one in particular seems to have rubbed fans of Marvel's first family in the wrong way, and that was the casting of Michael B. Jordan for the role of
Johnny Storm, aka Human Torch.
Speaking with the New York Daily News, Jordan buries
the "controversy" by saying that he "can't make everybody happy," and that he doesn't "think anything about it."
The actor doesn't go into any details but he does say
that his Human Torch costume is a little bit tight.
"I was
like, 'This is a lot tighter than I expected.'"
As for his preparation for the role, Jordan reveals
that he has known that he was going to play the character for about two years.
"I've known about this
character and playing this role for almost two and a half years now. So when I
get all these new questions about how I'm feeling about it, I'm like, 'You
know, I'm feeling pretty good about it.'"
Going back to the ethnicity swap, the
actor reveals that it was something that he and the director fought for with
the consent of the studio.
"It's something that we kind of willed to happen,
which was really important to me and Josh [Trank]. We're lucky we had a studio
behind us that really supported our ambition and our want for change. Now we
have something really epic."
Finally, Jordan says that he would like someday to
play a character that would truly test his skills as an actor, like Heath
Ledger in The Dark Knight as the Joker.
"I've always been attracted
to characters that are very complicated or complex," he
said. "I think Heath Ledger did
such a great job with The Joker and the way he performed it. How it was so
crazy and psychotic, but you kind of understood it. I want to step in those
shoes and play a role like that."
Fantastic Four stars Michael B. Jordan as Johnny
Storm/Human Torch, Miles Teller as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Jamie Bell as
Ben Grimm/Thing, Kate Mara as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Toby Kebbel as Dr.
Doom, Tim Blake Nelson as Harvey Elder/Mole Man and Reg E. Cathey as Dr. Storm.
