Today at SDCC, Halo fans were greeted
to a first look at the director's Sergio Mimica-Gezzan's Halo: Nightfall,
written by Prison Break creator Paul Scheuring.
The Ridley Scott and David
Zucker executive produced feature is set between Halo 4 and Halo 5, and focuses
on a Spartan called Agent Locke, played by Mike Colter.
“Halo: Nightfall follows the
origin story of legendary man hunter Jameson Locke (Mike Colter) and his team
as they are caught in a horrific terrorist attack while investigating terrorist
activity on the distant colony world of Sedra. Led by Locke, the Office of
Naval Intelligence (ONI) agents are forced to coordinate with a Sedran
commander with a remarkable history and deep-rooted mistrust of ONI. As the
plot unravels, they’re drawn to an ancient, hellish artifact where they’re
forced to fight for their survival, question everything, and ultimately choose
between their loyalties and their lives.”
Considering Locke is on the
cover of Halo 5, his actions in this series are most likely going
to be very important. Locke will be a playable character in the game, and the
creators confirmed that he will also be sporting some new Spartan armor. When
asked, Colter refused to confirm weather or not he is a friend or foe of Master
Chief.
Aside from serving as an
origin story, the creators talked about the show also deals with the
repercussions of Halo 4, as well as the political tension between
the colonies and the UNSC. The colonies are living on the outskirts of
technology, patching things together as best they can with limited resources.
They spoke of how the piece of Halo that the team goes to is a “partially
functioning section” which “the nature and function is now dangerous and poses
a significant threat to the characters, in this way the Halo practically is
it’s own character.” Wolfkill also revealed that there will be a new vehicle in
the show called a Condor, a medium sized transport with slip space technology.
The actors talked about
training for the stunt work on the film, learning parkour, and having to run
over harsh terrain, and how often they fell. O’Connor talked about the casting
process, finding athletic actors that could handle the stunts. Colter spoke of
how the production must have encountered every kind of weather while filming;
rain, storms, ice, and at once point a delay in filming because the plane they
were flying to Iceland on had to land in Scotland for 24 hours.
The cast also spoke of their
characters. Colter talked about how Locke was called “Marlo” during some of the
filming and the confusion that came from that, but that his favorite element in
the script is that even in the large scale environments, the story is really
about the character interactions. Chong spoke about her character Talitha
Macer, and he conflict with trying to prove herself, to the ONI.
The creators talked about
trying to find the right environment to film in to be Halo, and how they came
to choose Iceland. They knew they would have to use CGI, but they wanted the
world to look and feel as real as possible for audiences. They talked about how
Iceland’s terrain fit the look and ascetic of what they were going for, and
with Memica-Gezzan directing, it just seemed to look and feel like it was a
part of the all ready established universe.
The 5-part series will be
released as a part of the Halo: The Master Chief Collection and
available on Xbox Live on November 11th.
