While Marvel has for the most part
multiple standalone movies for each of their characters and are already
shooting the next installment of The Avengers, DC Comics and Warner Bros. are
falling behind in their superhero live-action big screen adaptations, which
some (including us) believe might cause some hasty judgment in how they plan
and develop future films and sequels, case in point is Zack Snyder’s sequel to
last year’s Man of Steel, which I believe is stacking up too many characters in
the hopes of rushing in the Justice League movie.
At this time not much is known
about the yet untitled Batman vs. Superman film (so nothing to bitch about) with
the exception of the cast, which according to “everything” that has been
written, it’s not to everyone’s tasting. Ben Affleck as Batman was a shock for
a lot of people. Gal Gadot’s cast to play Wonder Woman left many wondering if
the actress could gain the muscle to play the character and the recent cast of
Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor forced people to ask themselves how will a bald
cap cover the actor’s full curly hair.
In a recent interview to the LA
Times the director gave an update on the project current status, addressed the
fan criticisms about the casting and the ever growing character roster.
“We’re getting ready to start
shooting in a month or so. It’s going great. I’m very excited. It’s very fun to
get into this world with different heroes coexisting in the same universe, but
a lot of balls in the air as they say. As a fan, it’s an amazing opportunity.”
About the fan criticism regarding
the cast, Snyder said:
“We know the material.
Unfortunately, the fans don’t know the material. So, we’re casting according to
what’s happening in the script. And we’re hoping that leads to enough
originality, enough perspective on what we’re doing that you get something
fresh and exciting. I understand the canon. I’m not crazy. I know what these
characters need from a mythological standpoint. I think Jesse is going to be an
amazing Lex. Let’s not forget he was nominated for an Academy Award. It’s not
like I just grabbed my friend to play the guy! This guy’s the real deal.”
He then teased about his plans
for a sequel:
“[The movie] literally takes the
Man of Steel and Batman universes and explodes them. You’re not as tied to the
mythology. In Man of Steel, we had to create an origin story, a mythology, and
there’s a lot of energy into that, which we love doing. Don’t get me wrong. But
when you think about how fun it is too — now that you’ve got these characters —
to now let ‘em loose. That’s fun!”
