Disney’s upcoming Maleficent is
one of this year’s biggest movies, not only because it’s a classic tale but
also because actress Angelina Jolie is lending her great acting skills
portraying one of Disney’s most vicious and memorable villains.
The actress confesses in an
interview that she was a little apprehensive about playing the character and
that only when she gathered her own kids and read them this new story she was
convinced that it was a story worth telling as in the next day she overheard
and argument between one of her children and another kid, saying that he just “didn’t
understand” Maleficent.
Speaking with EW, the actress
reveals that she just didn’t want a play a villain for the sake of playing a
villain:
“The exercise wasn’t how can we
have fun with a villain?” Jolie says. “It was: What turns people evil and vile
and aggressive and cruel? What could have possibly happened to her?”
Jolie adds that the film shows
how Maleficent became a villain:
“When that character makes
mistakes — which Maleficent does, and crosses many lines — you want them to be
angry at her and concerned and confused and in the end, somehow understand
something that they didn’t know before,”
In the film the actress gets the
chance to act opposite her daughter, Vivienne.
“We think it’s fun for our kids
to have cameos and join us on set, but not to be actors. That’s not our goal
for Brad and I at all,” she says. “But the other 3- and 4-year-old
[performers] wouldn’t come near me. It had to be a child that liked me and
wasn’t afraid of my horns and my eyes and my claws. So it had to be Viv.”
Maleficent opens on May 30th.
