The World
of Warcraft feature film adaptation has been in development hell, mainly
because of two things. The first is that pretty much all movies based on video
games sucked, and two because of the extremely extensive world that Warcraft
carries. But nonetheless in the last couple or so months development seems to
have picked up with Duncan Jones coming on board as a director and news that
actors Paula Patton, Travis Fimmel and Collin Farrell are in different stages
of negotiations to play different lead characters in the adaptation.
At
this year SDCC, a short animation was shown, which teased non-fans, fans and
die-hard fans for more, and more they got at the recent BlizzCon. During the
event Blizzard Entertainment hold a panel with the director and the Oscar
winning special effects supervisor Bill Westenhofer (Life of Pi) who talked a
little about the film and then showed some concept art.
Jones
said that the first time he read the script he thought it wouldn’t work because
it focused too heavily on the Human Alliance, but now “It’s about both sides.
It’s going to be red and blue.”
Despite
not giving anything away regarding the cast, the film will tell “the story of
Anduin Lothar versus Durotan, Human and Orc heroes from the original real-time
strategy games.”
“It’s been hard to find an actor who looks
like Durotan,” said Jones. “Every time I meet an actor I just try to squish his
face.”
Then
came Westenhofer’s time to speak, and he confessed that he is an avid player
and has a level 90 Mage. The special effects guru said that the Orcs would be
actors in make-up and not CGI, and compared the film’s tone to that of Ridley
Scott’s Gladiator. He then said regarding the props that “The swords that are
being built are the biggest swords a human being can wield.”
