In keeping with the trend, MGM is moving ahead with a
new take on the classic The Pink Panther. The live-action and animation mix
will be directed by The Simpsons Movie director David Silverman. This time around,
the focus of the film will be the titular panther and not Inspector Jacques
Clouseau, who won't appear at all.
The story of the film will be “an international jewel heist caper movie.”
Henry Mancini's original score will be used once again.
Now a little bit of history. The Pink
Panther was a diamond that got stolen in director Blake Edwards' 1963 movie The
Pink Panther, which starred the great Peter Sellers as Inspector Jacques Clouseau. Sellers went on to play
the iconic Inspector four more times. The iconic cartoon first appeared as part
of the opening and ending credits to Edwards' 1963 film, and only then jumped
to the small screen. In 2006 the character was revived (although i think he
probably wished he remained dead) to a horrible, bad, atrocious effect with
Steve Martin playing (badly) the lead.
Julie Andrews (Edwards' widow) will produce the movie,
which at this point doesn't have a starting date for production nor release
date.
