Under the Dome takes
place in a scenic town in Maine,
which is all of a sudden and without explanation sealed off from the rest of
the world by a mysterious invisible force field. Inside the town, a handful of
people, including three children and an ex-army captain oppose a politician
that is trying to seize power and try to discover the source of the dome.
Actor Dean Norris, best known for his role
on Breaking Bad will
be portraying Big Jim, the main villain of this new show.
During
the panel, the subject of LOST came
up quite often, since both Vaughan and Bender worked on that show. Both
of them made it clear that although there is a similar premise to both shows
they would be completely different. Despite that Vaughan joked about how he planned to copy everything that
made LOST a
success, in particular the focus on the characters. Bender also confirmed that
besides actor Jeff Fahey (Frank
Lapidus) there wouldn’t be any other LOST cameos as well as many LOST style flashbacks.
An
important thing for this project was that the author, Stephen King signed off on the
adaptation. Writer Brian Vaughan said
that his team had put a lot of effort into how life under the dome would be
like, to make the series as scientifically accurate as possible, to which Stephen King replied “You
know you can just make shit up too.”, which got a laugh out of the
audience.
Vaughan, Baer and Bender made it clear that Under the Dome wasn’t going
to be a miniseries, and that the plan is for it to have a long life. Vaughan said that the first 13 episodes
will provide forward momentum, even though the show hasn’t been picked up yet
for a second season. That being said, they already know how Under the Dome will end.
