Thirteen, and
Twilight filmmaker Catherine Hardwick is set to direct the remake of Miss Bala
for Sony Pictures.

Naranjo, the 2011 Mexican drama centers on a woman called Laura who enters the
Miss Baja beauty contest, who during rehearsals is kidnapped by a gang after
witnessing the killing of nightclub-goers and DEA agents. Laura then is forced
to work for them in the deadly drug war.
Kevin Misher ("Public
Enemies") will produce the remake alongside Canana Film's Pablo Cruz who
produced the 2011 original movie, which starred Stephanie Sigman ("Spectre"),
James Russo ("Django Unchained"), and Irene Azuela ("Sense8").
The film was Mexico's
submission to the 84th Academy Awards, and premired in the Un Certain Regard
section at Cannes.
