According to THR, the
studio is in the early stages of developing a new take on the famous sci-fi
franchise, with Zak Penn ("Avengers") in talks to write a treatment
for it.
Furthermore, sources
say that there is an interest in having Michael B. Jordan starring, but much
work must be done casting gets under way.
At this time neither
the Wachowski siblings nor producer Joel Silver are attached to the project,
and it's unclear what their role would be in the new movie or franchise, but
the studio is probably looking to get at the very least a blessing to the new
project from the siblings. As for Silver, who produced the first three films
but sold his portion of the rights to the studio back in 2012, it is said that
Warner is wary of bringing him in because apparently he has a strained relationship
with the Wachowskis.
While promoting John
Wick: Chapter 2, Keanu Reeves stated that he would be open to the idea of
returning to the franchise but only if the Wachowski siblings were involved.
"They
would have to write it and direct it. And then we’d see what the story is, but
yeah, I dunno, that’d be weird, but why not?"
The
idea of turning the franchise into a television series was floating around not
too long ago, but was canceled in recent months.
It's
unclear what other corners of the franchise Warner is looking to explore, but
if they follow the Disney and Lucasfilm model, we could be seeing a young
Morpheus movie on the horizon.
