Grindhouse filmmaker
Robert Rodriguez is in negotiations to direct the remake of Escape From New
York for 20th Century Fox.
John Carpenter, who
directed and co-wrote the 1981 cult classic film, is executive producing, with
Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman producing.
Expected to go into
production sometime later this year, the remake is being planned as the beginning
of a new franchise in the same mold as Planet of the Apes.
Set in the distant
future of 1997, Manhattan has been turned into a giant-sized maximum-security
prison. When the plane carrying the president of the United States crashes on
the island, an outlaw (Kurt Russell) is coerced into the rescue operation.
Neil Cross, the creator
of BBC's Luther starring Idris Elba, wrote the script.
Rodriguez recently
directed the big screen adaptation of the popular sci-fi manga Alita: Battle Angel.
Produced by James Cameron and starring Rosa Salazar, Mahershala Ali, and
Christopher Waltz, Alita opens in theaters on July 20, 2018.
