Joss Whedon is
nearing a deal to write, direct, and produce a Batgirl standalone movie for
Warner Bros. and their DC Extended Universe.
The yet untitled
project, which will certainly raise many eyebrows amongst Marvel fans given
Whedon's attachment to the MCU, will also feature other DC Comics characters.
The movie is the second
project starring a female lead announced since a Wonder Woman film became a
reality, the other one being David Ayer's upcoming Gotham City Sirens, which
will star Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn and other well-known female characters
from the DC Comics universe.
For Whedon this is a
big move. As mentioned above, the filmmaker directed both installments of the
Avengers and had a significant say in the overall universe, including the TV
show Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Created by Gardner
Fox and artist Carmine Infantino, Batgirl's comic debut happened in 1967 in the
pages of The Million Dollar Debut of Batgirl. The first Batgirl was called
Barbara Gordon, and she was the daughter of Gotham City police commissioner
James Gordon.
Warner Bros. slate of
upcoming DC based movies include Wonder Woman, Justice League, Aquaman, and Batman.
In the pipeline, the studio has a sequel to Suicide Squad, Cyborg, Flash, and Shazam
movies.
